The invention of the Jigsaw Puzzle ushered in a popular, viable, and beneficial pastime for humanity. At first, it was an individual or single-person activity which was discovered when 2 or more people got together to put all the pieces together. Contest rules, guidelines, and requirements were established by official organizations like the “World Jigsaw Puzzle Federation”, featuring individual, pairs, and team categories. Contestants were ranked according to the speed and accuracy by which they completed the puzzles. Also, everyone had to solve the same exact puzzle to establish uniformity and to avoid any form of advantages, ensuring that “Speed” would be the only variable.

Expert players were tasked with either 500 to 1000-piece Jigsaws that had to be solved within 30 minutes to an hour depending on the contest criteria. Usually, a 500-piece Jigsaw was assigned to a single contestant while s thousand-piece puzzle was assigned to a team or pair. Now we have an idea of how many pieces Humpy Dumpy had broken into.

Regardless, in Jigsaw Puzzle competitions, the general atmosphere though highly competitive, is often described to be friendly, supportive, social, welcoming, and a lot of fun.

Physical and Virtual Competitive Speed Puzzle-Solving

With the accessibility of modern electronic communications a part of today’s everyday life, the application of it in Competitive Speed Puzzle-Solving Tournaments and Contests has become a common and acceptable practice. Though a hybrid or online competition may take a bit more time and effort as per taking into account connection and presentation issues, the advantages of including contestants wherever they are, outweighs many of the limitations that have to be solved to get the game going.
